Local events are a great way to be inspired, expand your knowledge of a certain topic, and meet others in the industry in your area. These learning and networking opportunities are priceless, especially if you've just relocated to a new city. This week, we've gathered up five of our favorite event series, focusing on ones that are global/nationwide(ish) and won't cost you anything.
CreativeMornings is a global breakfast lecture series that is always free. Talks happen once a month in most cities, and while the speakers aren't always directly related to advertising, it's always someone inspiring who's doing something interesting in a creative field. The event is also a great place to meet other creative people in a relaxed environment. RSVPs fill up quickly, so remember to set a reminder for yourself on your calendar.
2) The One Club's Creative Boot Camp
Held in locations around the world, The One Club's Creative Boot Camp is a free intensive 4-day workshop that introduces students to the process of creating an advertising campaign for a real client provided by a top agency. Students work in teams and are mentored throughout the workshop by some of the best creative professionals in the industry. The Creative Boot Camp—open to current students and recent graduates—is a fantastic way to build up your portfolio and understanding of the campaign creation process, and to meet mentors you can keep in touch with after the event ends.
While only hosting events in NYC (for now), STRTGST is a must-check-out. Described as an event series and community for people who think for a living, STRTGST puts on some of the best deep-dives into specific cultures and topics to feed your curiosity. Its organizers are always thinking of ways to make the events unlike other events you've been to (no standard panels here!), while providing non-awkward ways to meet other creative minds.
SheSays is an award-winning global organization focused on the engagement, education and advancement of women in the creative industries. Members suggest topics they want to hear about at free events held in cities around the world, often hosted by an agency. While SheSays is focused on creating more women leaders, there are no barriers for entry—men are welcome to attend, so they can participate in changing the ratio.
5) Ladies Get Paid
Ladies Get Paid provides tools, resources, and community to help women negotiate for equal pay and power in the workplace. With events in most major cities, as well as pre-work coffee and post-work drink meetups on an ongoing basis, there are plenty of chances to not only improve your negotiating skills so you get paid what you're worth, but to also meet other badass women in your community.
Bonus: Ad 2
Ad 2 fosters professional development and community for advertising professionals 32 and under through its 23 local chapters across the US. Each chapter holds a variety of events throughout the year, ranging from after-hours agency tours to networking happy hours. There is a membership fee (that varies between chapters and is different for students vs. working professionals), which is why it's a bonus resource on this list.
