As a special graduation / hooray-it's-almost-summer! gift, I'm so excited to introduce our newest resource: the We Are Next Index. One place to find all the resources available to junior talent to help you start and slay in your career. It prioritizes free/low cost resources available to everyone, and the best part is it'll continue to grow. As a small sample, here are 5 of my favorite resources from the Index to get your started.
1) The Advertising Reading List from the School of Communication Arts
I've been looking for a comprehensive list of books about advertising for those just starting out for awhile, and this one is the best I've seen so far. What I like is that the list is split into chunks based on what the educators/mentors at SCA think "the story" of the reading list should be. Whether you read them in order or not, it's a great resource for building your summer reading list.
I'm shocked at how few people know about CreativeMornings, a global breakfast lecture series that is always free. Talks happen once a month in most cities, and while the speakers aren't always directly related to advertising, it's always someone inspiring who's doing something interesting in a creative field. The event is also a great place to meet other creative people in a relaxed environment. RSVPs fill up quickly, so remember to set a reminder for yourself on your calendar. There are also tons of videos of past talks on the website that you can explore.
3) Hyper Island Toolbox
This toolbox blows me away every time I revisit it. Described as a resource to "apply creative collaboration and unleash potential in your team," it contains free methods, exercises, and tools you can use for brainstorms, team building, and more. It's a great way for junior talent to work on the "soft skills" side of working in advertising, including navigating team dynamics and communication. While helpful to all roles, I think this toolbox would make an entry-level Account Manager outright dangerous.
- 4) Planning Dirty
This newsletter by Julian Cole (most recently Head of Communications Planning at BBDO) is like resource inception—a lot of its emails contain links to other tools and resources for planners and strategists. Julian is great at gathering opinions/advice from all types of planners, and finding/creating open source tools, such as this jam-packed deck of Day 1 advice for new planners.
5) Young Shits
If you're a long-time reader/listener of We Are Next, you've heard of Young Shits, the ad competition run by Kathryn Kvas and Vignesh Seshadri (peep their crazy helpful podcast episode). Instead of trophies, winners receive personalized feedback, and the grand prize winner receives a one-on-one phone call/beer or brunch meet-up with the judge. It's a perfect way to build your portfolio, earn some cred, and make connections with people who can recommend you for jobs in the future. The best news: they've opened up a professional category for those who already have jobs in advertising!
