Alyssa Neilson is a Digital Strategist at 180LA, and joined us to share learnings about her traditional educational path into advertising and non-traditional postgrad path into agency life. Hear about breaking into strategy, reaching back and helping people behind you despite having imposter syndrome, and her recent move to Los Angeles from New York.
Heads up: Join me as I run all over NYC visiting agencies, recording podcasts, and taking other meetings! Follow along via my Instagram Story.
The event on 9/12 at Firstborn has filled up, but we'll be live streaming the panel discussion on the We Are Next Facebook page! Tune in at 6:30pm EST / 3:30pm PST.
What she learned from her hectic relocation from New York City to Los Angeles, finding the right agency in LA, and not being afraid to leave the wrong situation.
Breaking into strategy, what to put on your website, and navigating the line between being interesting and not forcing it.
Interviewing and not seeing people like her on the other side of the table, and reaching back and helping young people behind you despite having imposter syndrome.
Navigating internships after you graduate.
Her experience getting a job at 72andSunny through a distant LinkedIn connection who was also a junior, as well as some unexpected interview behavior.
“Advertising is one of the few industries where it really matters to be just as interesting as you are interested.”
“No matter how junior you are, if you’re in the building, there are other people outside of the building that you can bring in that may reach out to you. And it’s important that you don’t graduate from a place of wanting to help other people.”
“Strategy is not a desk job. It’s the only job at an agency where you shouldn’t be at your desk all the time. […] In theory, it just means that your experiences really matter, and you should go out and see the world, and listen to what people are talking about, and know what’s going on to really add value.”
